The Healthiest (and the Hardest) Places in Life
July 12, 2011
Where I grew up there was a series of mountains and hills, one of which housed a beautiful monastery. I found the monastery intriguing. While I enjoyed living in the country I couldn't quite understand why someone would choose to separate himself from society at a monastery—was society really so bad?
Although the years passed my intrigue hasn't waned. And (perhaps more interestingly) I continually overhear the voiced longings of others who wish to move to the remote bush away from modern society. Again I don't quite connect, but after years of curious observation I have a bit more understanding.
In some cases this desire stems from a longing to be in touch with one's self and nature. Sometimes it takes an extreme separation to find a quiet place free of distractions for reflection and meditation to take place. But in others this desire for separation could be motivated in an attempt to avoid sin and temptation. In this case the person believes a complete departure from regular life is the only surefire way to ensure success.
I think many of us approach doubt in this same extreme way—in an effort to avoid doubt (which we catch ourselves believing represents sin and unbelief) we steer clear from it and avoid anything even remotely resembling it, including doubtful thoughts. While the motivation is good—avoiding sin and unbelief—the logic and conclusion present a problem.
The problem? Even if you try your hardest, you will still discover secret doubts in your life. Most undoubtedly. They usually make themselves known in times of stress and anxiety, when your uncertainty is pushed to the surface and your confidence and faith are shaken.
So instead of avoiding doubt, why not admit you encounter it from time to time and learn to deal with it effectively. Chuck Swindoll in his message Getting Through the Tough Stuff of Doubt teaches that doubt can be a great opportunity for growth in our faith. He says there is room to come to Christ and still have questions.
“Throughout any life that is lived realistically and reflectively we come to places where we feel we cannot cope. Those are the healthiest places in life—and the hardest. When the bottom drops out. When the rug is pulled out from under us. When some incredible event occurs those are God-given divinely provided growth. Opportunities for growth-spurts. They are also in fields of uncertainty. For doubt springs up.”
