Discernment and Surviving the School Jungle

School seems to get the brunt of blame for kids that don't turn out quite right…or don't discover their potential.

I've always wondered about why that is. You probably hear like I do about kids without any advantages making their way in the world. And I'm sure you're able to think of at least a couple people who “had it all” and squandered their benefits carelessly. Is it really the school that can make or break a student?

To be honest, I have no idea how people choose schools for themselves or their children. I had it easy because there were only a few options for schools and you had to get special permission to attend one outside of your area. And for university there were only a few schools offering the program I desired so the decision process wasn't too daunting either.

Hearing from my friends with school-aged children there seem to be many more options these days. And schools don't seem to be chosen based on proximity anymore. It's a competitive, rough, jungle out there!

But actually this is nothing new. In his message Survival Training for the School Jungle, Chuck Swindoll covers three case studies of three very different school experiences…all from the Old Testament.

The simple truth is no matter what school you go to, schools don't destroy your faith or make your decisions—you destroy your faith and make your decisions. More than any other quality, discernment is required to survive the school years. It's the ability to see the outcome of your decisions.

Whether you're a student going back for another semester of university, or a parent sending his or her child off to school, new beginnings are tough! By following the stories of Samuel, Daniel, and Moses, Chuck offers just the right blend of direction and encouragement in order to help you survive another year in the school jungle…even if the situation is not ideal.
